GATE 2022 IN – Question 48

Digital Electronics · Number systems and combinational logic · 2 marks · Multiple choice

$A=a_1a_0$ and $B=b_1b_0$ are unsigned two-bit binary numbers. Boolean $F(a_1,a_0,b_1,b_0)$ is 1 exactly when $A>B$. Its minimized form is ______.

  1. $a_1\bar b_1+a_1a_0\bar b_0$
  2. $a_1\bar b_1+a_1a_0\bar b_0+a_0\bar b_0\bar b_1$
  3. $a_1a_0\bar b_0+a_0\bar b_0\bar b_1$
  4. $a_1\bar b_1+a_1a_0\bar b_0+a_0\bar b_0b_1$

Correct answer: (B) $a_1\bar b_1+a_1a_0\bar b_0+a_0\bar b_0\bar b_1$

Explanation

A>B if a1=1,b1=0, or if high bits match and a0=1,b0=0. Expanding and absorbing redundant terms gives **a1b1bar+a1a0b0bar+a0b0barb1bar, B**. Both high-bit equality cases are covered.
