GATE 2021 MT – Question 21

Transport Phenomena and Rate Processes · Chemical and electrochemical kinetics · 1 mark · Multiple choice

For a zero-order chemical reaction, which statement is FALSE?

  1. Concentration versus time is a straight line
  2. Increasing reacting-species concentration increases reaction rate
  3. Half-life depends on initial concentration and the zero-order rate constant
  4. Reaction rate depends on temperature

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) Increasing reacting-species concentration increases reaction rate

Explanation

A zero-order reaction has rate k independent of reactant concentration while that regime persists. Increasing concentration therefore does not increase rate, making **B** false. Integration gives C=C0−kt and half-life C0/(2k).
