GATE 2021 MT – Question 26

Metallurgical Thermodynamics · Electrochemistry · 1 mark · Numerical answer

Given $E^\circ_{Ni^{2+}/Ni}=-0.25$ V and $F=96500$ C/mol, the standard chemical potential $\mu^\circ_{Ni^{2+}}$ at 298 K is ______ J/mol (nearest integer).

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: -48251 to -48240

Explanation

For Ni²⁺+2e⁻→Ni, ΔG°=−2FE°. Taking standard elemental-metal and electron chemical potentials as the reference makes μ°Ni2+=2FE°.

Thus 2×96500×(−0.25)=**−48250 J/mol**.
