GATE 2021 MT – Question 28

Mechanical Behaviour of Materials · Plasticity and yield criteria · 1 mark · Numerical answer

A body has stress tensor $\begin{bmatrix}50&0&0\\0&200&0\\0&0&100\end{bmatrix}$ MPa. For yielding under Tresca’s criterion, its uniaxial tensile yield stress must be less than or equal to ______ MPa (nearest integer).

Correct answer: 150 to 150

Explanation

The principal stresses are 200,100,50 MPa. Tresca equivalent stress is σmax−σmin=150 MPa. Yield occurs when this reaches or exceeds uniaxial yield stress, so the maximum allowable yield-stress threshold is **150 MPa**.
