GATE 2021 MT – Question 54

Metallurgical Thermodynamics · Thermodynamic laws and functions · 2 marks · Numerical answer

One mole of ideal gas at 10 atm and 300 K expands reversibly and adiabatically to 1 atm. Work done by the gas is ______ J (nearest integer). Given $R=8.314$ J mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$, 1 atm = 101325 Pa, and $C_p=2.5R$.

Correct answer: 2230 to 2270

Explanation

Cv=Cp−R=1.5R and γ=5/3.

Thus T2=300(P2/P1)^((γ−1)/γ)=300×0.1⁰·⁴=119.43 K. Work by the gas is Cv(T1−T2)=**2252 J** to the nearest integer.
