GATE 2018 CE (CE2) – Question 53

Geotechnical Engineering · Compaction and one-dimensional consolidation · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A clay compression curve is straight on a void-ratio versus logarithmic effective-stress plot and passes through $(e=1.2,\sigma_v^\prime=50\ \mathrm{kPa})$ and $(e=0.6,\sigma_v^\prime=800\ \mathrm{kPa})$. Its compression index, to two decimals, is ______.

Correct answer: 0.45 to 0.55

Explanation

Compression index is $C_c=(1.2-0.6)/\log_{10}(800/50)=0.6/\log_{10}16=0.498289$, rounded to 0.50.
