GATE 2017 ME (ME2) – Question 50
A 60 mm water jet strikes a plate with a 40 mm hole. Part passes horizontally through the hole and the rest is deflected vertically as shown. Water density is 1000 kg/m³. The horizontal force needed to hold the plate is ______ N.

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: 627 to 629
Explanation
The annular part of the jet loses its horizontal velocity; the central part passes through unchanged. Horizontal momentum loss isρV²(A1−A2)=1000·20²·π(0.06²−0.04²)/4=**628.32N**. The holding force has equal magnitude and acts opposite the jet force.
