GATE 2017 ME (ME2) – Question 52
In a Rankine cycle, turbine inlet and exit enthalpies are 2803 and 1800 kJ/kg; pump inlet and exit enthalpies are 121 and 124 kJ/kg. Specific steam consumption is ______ kg/kWh.

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: 3.5 to 3.7
Explanation
Turbine work is2803−1800=1003kJ/kg and pump work is124−121=3kJ/kg. Net work is1000kJ/kg. Producing1kWh requires3600kJ, so specific steam consumption is3600/1000=**3.6kg/(kW·h)**. Ignoring pump work would use gross turbine output.
