GATE 2016 CE (CE1) – Question 61

Air Pollution and Municipal Solid Wastes · Air pollution: pollutants, sources, impacts, control and air quality index · 2 marks · Numerical answer

An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) with 5600 m2 of collector plate area is 96 percent efficient in treating 185 m3/s of flue gas from a 200 MW thermal power plant. It was found that in order to achieve 97 percent efficiency, the collector plate area should be 6100 m2. In order to increase the efficiency to 99 percent, the ESP collector plate area (expressed in m2) would be ______

Correct answer: 8000 to 8040

Explanation

The Deutsch–Anderson relation is η=1−exp(−wA/Q). At unchanged migration velocity and flow, area is proportional to−ln(1−η). Using the96% datum gives A99=5600ln(0.01)/ln(0.04)=**8011.79m²**. The97% datum gives a consistent migration velocity within the rounding of the supplied observations.
