Correct answer: (C) a point on the circumference at location X

Explanation

The fixed end X has the largest bending moment from the transverse end load. On its circumference, bending normal stress and torsional shear are greatest, superimposed on the axial stress. The intended critical location is therefore **a point on the circumference at X, C**. The most highly stressed circumferential side depends on the signs of axial and bending stresses.
