GATE 2016 ME (ME3) – Question 22

Machine Design · Rolling and sliding contact bearings · 1 mark · Multiple choice

  2. Angular contact ball bearing
  3. Cylindrical (straight) roller bearing
  4. Single row tapered roller bearing

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) Cylindrical (straight) roller bearing

Explanation

Straight cylindrical rollers principally transmit radial load through line contact with the races. In the ideal arrangement shown without a thrust-carrying flange, they do not support an axial load. Thus **C**; tapered and suitably arranged ball bearings can carry axial components.
