GATE 2016 ME (ME3) – Question 21

Vibrations · Free vibration of single degree of freedom systems, damping · 1 mark · Numerical answer

The static deflection of a spring under gravity, when a mass of 1 kg is suspended from it, is 1 mm. Assume the acceleration due to gravity g =10 m/s2. The natural frequency of this spring-mass system (in rad/s) is_____________

Correct answer: 99 to 101

Explanation

Static equilibrium gives kδ=mg, while ω_n=√(k/m). Eliminating k/m gives ω_n=√(g/δ)=√(10/0.001)=**100rad/s**. Mass is unnecessary because it cancels. The requested angular frequency is not frequency in hertz.
