GATE 2016 ME (ME3) – Question 48

Machine Design · Bolted, riveted and welded joints · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A bolted joint has four bolts arranged as shown in figure. The cross sectional area of each bolt is 25 mm2. A torque T = 200 N-m is acting on the joint. Neglecting friction due to clamping force, maximum shear stress in a bolt is ______ MPa.

Correct answer: 39.9 to 40.1

Explanation

All bolts lie at radius50mm and share the pure torque equally. Tangential force per bolt is T/(4r)=200000/(4×50)=1000N. Dividing by25mm² gives **40MPa**. Friction is explicitly neglected, so the torque is transmitted through bolt shear.
