On L²[−1,1] define (Tf)(x)=f(−x), and let M=ker(I−T). Find the distance from φ(t)=eᵗ to M.

  1. $\frac12\sqrt{e^2-e^{-2}+4}$
  2. $\frac12\sqrt{e^2-e^{-2}-2}$
  3. $\frac12\sqrt{e^2-4}$
  4. $\frac12\sqrt{e^2-e^{-2}-4}$

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) $\frac12\sqrt{e^2-e^{-2}-4}$

Explanation

M is the closed space of even functions, whose orthogonal complement is the odd functions. Split eᵗ=cosh t+sinh t. The distance is ‖sinh t‖₂. Its square is ∫₋₁¹(e²ᵗ+e⁻²ᵗ−2)/4 dt=(e²−e⁻²−4)/4. Taking the square root gives **D**.
