Linear Algebra · Vector Spaces and Linear Transformations · 2 marks · Multiple choice

A linear T:ℝ²→ℝ² satisfies T(1,2)=(1,0),T(2,1)=(1,1). If T⁻¹(p,q)=(x,y), which holds?

  1. x=p−q,y=2p−q
  2. x=p+q,y=2p−q
  3. x=p+q,y=2p+q
  4. x=p−q,y=2p+q

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) x=p+q,y=2p−q

Explanation

Decompose (p,q)=(p−q)(1,0)+q(1,1). The preimage is (p−q)(1,2)+q(2,1)=(p+q,2p−q). The two original input vectors are independent, so the inverse exists. **B**.
