GATE 2017 CE (CE1) – Question 4

General Aptitude · Quantitative Aptitude: Algebra, Geometry and Mensuration · 1 mark · Multiple choice

If the radius of a right circular cone increases by 50%, its volume increases by

  1. 75%
  2. 100%
  3. 125%
  4. 237.5%

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) 125%

Explanation

With height unchanged, $V=\pi r^2h/3$. The new radius is $1.5r$, so the new volume is $1.5^2V=2.25V$. The increase is $(2.25-1)100=125\%$, option C. Holding height fixed is the implicit assumption when only the radius is changed.
