GATE 2017 CE (CE1) – Question 44

Transportation Infrastructure · Geometric design of roadways: cross-section, sight distance, alignments · 2 marks · Multiple choice

A horizontal highway curve has radius 120 m, design speed 60 km/h and lateral-friction coefficient 0.15. Assuming full friction, find the required superelevation and, if no superelevation is provided, the needed friction coefficient.

  1. 1/11.6 and 0.10
  2. 1/10.5 and 0.37
  3. 1/11.6 and 0.24
  4. 1/12.9 and 0.24

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) 1/11.6 and 0.24

Explanation

Using the highway approximation $e+f=v^2/(127R)$ with $v$ in km/h gives $e+f=60^2/(127\times120)=0.23622$. With $f=0.15$, $e=0.08622\simeq1/11.6$. With $e=0$, all lateral demand is friction, $f=0.23622\simeq0.24$. These are the values in C.
