GATE 2020 PH – Question 52

Electronics · P-n diodes, bipolar junction transistors, field effect transistors · 2 marks · Numerical answer

The circuit contains a 1 kΩ resistor and three series forward diodes connected from +10.1 V to ground as shown. Each diode drops 0.7 V. Find current I through the resistor in mA.

Correct answer: 8 to 8

Explanation

The three forward diodes together drop $3(0.7)=2.1$ V. The resistor therefore has $10.1-2.1=8.0$ V across it. Ohm’s law gives $I=8.0/1000=0.008$ A = 8 mA. All three diodes are forward biased in the indicated path.
