Electromagnetics · Maxwell's Equations · 1 mark · Multiple choice

In a circuit, there is a series connection of an ideal resistor and an ideal capacitor. The conduction current (in Amperes) through the resistor is $2\sin(t+\pi/2)$. The displacement current (in Amperes) through the capacitor is ________.

  1. $2\sin(t)$
  2. $2\sin(t+\pi)$
  3. $2\sin(t+\pi/2)$
  4. 0

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) $2\sin(t+\pi/2)$

Explanation

In a series connection the same current flows everywhere. Inside the capacitor the conduction current is replaced by displacement current, so that the total current is continuous. The displacement current is therefore equal to the conduction current, $2\sin(t+\pi/2)$.
