GATE 2024 BM – Question 65

Biomechanics · Joint Forces and Equilibrium · 2 marks · Numerical answer

The shown extensor exercise apparatus has OP=0.15 m,OQ=0.35 m,θ=30°,lower-arm weight 20 N acting at P,and tensile force F=50 N at Q. Extensor muscle moment arm is 0.25 m. Find the muscle force holding the position, nearest integer N.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 22 to 24

Explanation

The applied tensile force supplies moment 50×0.35×sin30°=8.75 N m about O. The arm weight supplies the opposite moment 20×0.15=3.00 N m. The extensor must balance the remaining 5.75 N m through its 0.25 m moment arm. Therefore muscle force=5.75/0.25=23 N.
