GATE 2023 BM – Question 43

Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering · Biomaterial Characterization · 2 marks · Multiple choice

In a biomaterial, formation of hydrogen bonds involving alcoholic groups leads to which infrared spectral change?

  1. A shift of the peak around 1700 cm⁻¹
  2. A shift of the peak around 2800 cm⁻¹
  3. Broadening of the peak around 3500 cm⁻¹
  4. Disappearance of the peak around 1700 cm⁻¹

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) Broadening of the peak around 3500 cm⁻¹

Explanation

Alcohol O–H stretching occurs in the high-wavenumber region near 3500 cm⁻¹. Hydrogen bonding creates a distribution of O–H bond environments and stretching frequencies, producing a broad band. Thus C is the characteristic effect; the carbonyl region near 1700 cm⁻¹ does not identify this alcoholic hydrogen-bond change.
