GATE 2022 BM – Question 24

Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering · Biomaterial Characterization · 1 mark · Multiple choice

What is the principal use of a scanning electron microscope’s backscattered-electron detector?

  1. Study surface topography
  2. Quantify surface roughness
  3. Measure atomic number
  4. Contrast areas with different chemical compositions

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) Contrast areas with different chemical compositions

Explanation

Backscattered-electron yield depends strongly on average atomic number, producing compositional contrast between regions. Thus D describes its principal imaging use. It does not directly measure a unique atomic number without further analysis, and secondary-electron imaging is more commonly used for fine surface topography.
