GATE 2016 EC (EC2) – Question 21

Electronic Devices · P-N Junction and Semiconductor Devices · 1 mark · Multiple choice

The Ebers–Moll model of a BJT is valid

  1. only in active mode
  2. only in active and saturation modes
  3. only in active and cut-off modes
  4. in active, saturation and cut-off modes

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) in active, saturation and cut-off modes

Explanation

Ebers–Moll models the two junction injection currents together with their transported components. It does not assume that one junction is always reverse-biased.

Consequently it describes forward active operation, both junctions forward-biased in saturation, and both effectively nonconducting in cut-off. The valid set listed is **D**.
