GATE 2016 EC (EC3) – Question 6
A vehicle’s velocity along a straight line, in m/s, is plotted against time in seconds. How much does its odometer reading increase over the 7 seconds, in metres?

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: (D) 5
Explanation
An odometer measures distance, so add areas under the speed |v| rather than signed velocity. From 0–1 s the area is 1/2; from 1–2 it is 1; from 2–3 it is 3/2; from 3–4 it is 1; and from 4–5 it is zero.
The negative-velocity triangle from 5–7 contributes another 1 metre in distance. Total distance is $0.5+1+1.5+1+1=$ **5 m, D**.
