GATE 2016 EC (EC3) – Question 5
Two constant-speed trains take 10 s and 15 s respectively to pass a telegraph post completely. Their lengths are 120 m and 150 m respectively. The magnitude of their speed difference in m/s is

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: (A) 2.0
Explanation
To pass a fixed post, each train travels its own length. The first speed is 120/10=12 m/s and the second is 150/15=10 m/s.
Their speed difference is |12−10|=**2 m/s, A**. No relative-motion correction is needed because both times refer to the stationary post.
