A culture starts with five human fibroblast cells. Two never divide; the other three each complete three rounds of division. At that stage, what is the total number of kinetochores in all cells?
Three dividing founders produce $3(2^3)=24$ cells. Add the two undivided founders to obtain 26. Under the intended postdivision diploid-cell convention, each cell has 46 chromosomes and 46 kinetochores. Therefore the total is $26(46)=1196$. A replicated mitotic cell would require a different chromatid count; the question is evaluated after the completed divisions.
