GATE 2020 CY – Question 29

Inorganic Chemistry · Lanthanides and Actinides: Recovery. Periodic properties, spectral and magnetic properties. · 1 mark · Numerical answer

In uranium recovery, an aqueous uranyl-ion solution is evaporated, dried in air at 400°C, then reduced with hydrogen at 700°C to give X. What is the uranium oxidation state in X? Uranium atomic number is 92.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 4 to 4

Explanation

Hydrogen reduction of the higher uranium oxide obtained by drying gives uranium dioxide, UO₂, under the stated recovery conditions. Two oxide ions contribute charge −4, so neutral UO₂ contains uranium in oxidation state +4. The initial uranyl ion contains U(VI), and the reduction lowers that oxidation state; the answer is 4.
