GATE 2020 MT – Question 30

Physical Metallurgy · Heat treatment and recrystallization · 1 mark · Multiple choice

A heavily cold-worked metal will

  1. Yield coarser recrystallized grains.
  2. Have lower driving force for recrystallization.
  3. Have a higher nucleation barrier for recrystallized grains.
  4. Recrystallize at lower temperatures.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) Recrystallize at lower temperatures.

Explanation

Heavy cold work increases dislocation density and stored deformation energy. That energy provides the driving force for recovery and recrystallization and promotes nucleation of strain-free grains. Consequently a greater prior deformation generally lowers the recrystallization temperature under comparable annealing conditions, D. It does not lower the driving force.
