Pipe diameters are normally distributed with mean 10 mm. The area under the normal curve between 9 and 10 mm is 0.35. Find probability of diameter greater than 11 mm, to 2 decimals.
Normal symmetry about 10 mm gives P(10 < X < 11) = P(9 < X < 10) = 0.35. The entire upper half has probability 0.5, so P(X > 11) = 0.5 − 0.35 = 0.15. The official grading also accepts 14–16 as a percentage representation; the separate probability and percentage ranges are retained.
