For an enzyme-catalyzed reaction, which statement is CORRECT? ΔG is Gibbs free-energy change and Keq is equilibrium constant.

  1. Enzymes affect ΔG but not Keq.
  2. Enzymes affect Keq but not ΔG.
  3. Enzymes affect both ΔG and Keq.
  4. Enzymes affect neither ΔG nor Keq.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) Enzymes affect neither ΔG nor Keq.

Explanation

An enzyme changes the kinetic pathway and lowers activation barriers, accelerating approach to equilibrium. It does not change the free energies of reactant and product states, so reaction ΔG and the thermodynamic equilibrium constant remain unchanged at fixed conditions. Thus D.
