Which cannot be the limiting substrate in the standard Monod growth model?

  1. Extracellular carbon source
  2. Extracellular nitrogen source
  3. Dissolved oxygen
  4. Intracellular carbon source

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) Intracellular carbon source

Explanation

The ordinary Monod model relates specific growth rate to the concentration of an extracellular limiting substrate available to cells. Carbon, nitrogen or dissolved oxygen can serve that role. Intracellular reserve substrate instead requires a storage/endogenous or quota model; it is not the external substrate variable in the stated Monod formulation. Select D.
