Which is the unit of heat-transfer coefficient?

  1. $\mathrm{W\,m^2\,K^{-1}}$
  2. $\mathrm{W\,m^{-2}\,K}$
  3. $\mathrm{W\,m^{-2}\,K^{-1}}$
  4. $\mathrm{W\,m^2\,K}$

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) $\mathrm{W\,m^{-2}\,K^{-1}}$

Explanation

Newton’s heat-transfer relation is $\dot Q=hA\Delta T$. Therefore $[h]=\mathrm W/(\mathrm{m^2 K})=\mathrm{W\,m^{-2}\,K^{-1}}$, C. Heat flux, rather than total heat rate, is proportional to temperature difference.
