An enzyme-catalyzed reaction is found to have $\Delta G = -100$ kJ mol$^{-1}$. Which of the following statements about this reaction is/are true?

  1. The rate of the reaction cannot be predicted
  2. The rate of the reaction is high
  3. The rate of the reaction is low
  4. The reaction is irreversible

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) The rate of the reaction cannot be predicted; (D) The reaction is irreversible

Explanation

$\Delta G$ tells whether a reaction can proceed, not how fast, so the rate cannot be predicted from it (A). A value of $-100$ kJ/mol gives an equilibrium constant of about $10^{17}$, so the reaction is for practical purposes irreversible (D).
