For an ideal plug flow reactor, which of the following statements is/are true?

  1. It can be approximated by a large number of ideal continuous stirred tank reactors connected in series
  2. It has significant back mixing
  3. It has significant axial mixing
  4. It has a uniform velocity profile across any cross section

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) It can be approximated by a large number of ideal continuous stirred tank reactors connected in series; (D) It has a uniform velocity profile across any cross section

Explanation

An ideal plug flow reactor has no mixing along the flow direction (no back mixing or axial mixing) and a flat velocity profile. A large number of CSTRs in series approaches it.
