What product forms when Mn₂(CO)₁₀ reacts with Br₂?

  1. Mn(CO)₅Br
  2. Mn₂(CO)₈Br₂
  3. Mn(CO)₄Br₂
  4. Mn₂(CO)₉Br

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) Mn(CO)₅Br

Explanation

Bromine cleaves the Mn–Mn bond, attaching one bromide to each metal. The balanced reaction is Mn₂(CO)₁₀+Br₂→2Mn(CO)₅Br. Each mononuclear product reaches the favourable 18-electron count. Select A.
