A cube-shaped sand casting of volume 27 cm³ solidifies completely in 180 s. With all other parameters fixed, find solidification time for a cylinder of radius 1 cm and height 6 cm, in seconds (one decimal place).
Use Chvorinov’s rule t=C(V/A)². The cube side is 3 cm, so V/A=27/54=0.5 cm. For the cylinder V=6π and total cooling area A=2πrh+2πr²=14π, so V/A=3/7 cm. Therefore $t=180[(3/7)/(1/2)]^2=132.24$ s, or 132.2.
