GATE 2017 EE – Question 14

Electromagnetic Fields · Inductance, Magnetomotive force, Reluctance, Magnetic circuits, Self and Mutual inductance of simple configurations · 1 mark · Multiple choice

A solid iron cylinder is placed in a region containing a uniform magnetic field such that the cylinder axis is parallel to the magnetic field direction. The magnetic field lines inside the cylinder will

  1. bend closer to the cylinder axis
  2. bend farther away from the axis
  3. remain uniform as before
  4. cease to exist inside the cylinder

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) bend closer to the cylinder axis

Explanation

Iron has a very high permeability, so field lines prefer to pass through it. They bend towards the iron and become concentrated inside the cylinder, closer to its axis.
