GATE 2017 EE – Question 28

Electric Circuits · Network solution methods: KCL, KVL, Node and Mesh analysis · 1 mark · Numerical answer

The power supplied by the 25 V source in the figure shown below is ________ W.

A 25 V source drives a current $I$ through a resistor $R_1$ with 17 V across it. $R_1$ is followed by a resistor $R_2$, which carries 14 A downwards, in parallel with a dependent current source $0.4I$ pointing upwards.

Correct answer: 248 to 252

Explanation

At the node after $R_1$, the current $I$ flows in, and the dependent source also pushes $0.4I$ into the same node. The resistor $R_2$ carries 14 A away. So $I + 0.4I = 14$, which gives $I = 10$ A. The power supplied by the 25 V source is $25 \times 10 = 250$ W.
