GATE 2017 EE – Question 34
In the converter circuit shown below, the switches are controlled such that the load voltage $v_o(t)$ is a 400 Hz square wave.
[Figure: A full-bridge converter with a 220 V DC source and four switches $S_1$, $S_2$, $S_3$ and $S_4$. The load is connected between the midpoints of the two legs, and $v_o(t)$ is the voltage across it.]
The RMS value of the fundamental component of $v_o(t)$ in volts is ________.

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: 196 to 200
Explanation
A full bridge producing a square wave of amplitude 220 V has a fundamental of peak $\frac{4 \times 220}{\pi} = 280.1$ V. The rms value is $\frac{280.1}{\sqrt{2}} = 198$ V.
