To obtain undisturbed clay soil sample, an Area Ratio of 10 % needs to be achieved for a thin walled sampling tube. If the outer diameter of the tube is 50.8 mm, the inner diameter (in mm) is ___________________ (*rounded off to one decimal place*).

Correct answer: 48.16 to 48.64
Explanation
The area ratio is $A_r = \frac{D_o^2 - D_i^2}{D_i^2} = 0.10$. So $D_o^2 = 1.1D_i^2$, and $D_i = \frac{50.8}{\sqrt{1.1}} = 48.4$ mm.
