GATE 2026 CE (CE1) – Question 34

Geomatics Engineering · Principles of surveying: plane and geodetic surveying, errors and adjustment · 1 mark · Numerical answer

A 30 m long tape is standardized at 25 °C. It was used to measure the length of a line which came out to be 200 m. The temperature during the measurement was 35 °C. The coefficient of expansion of the tape was $11 \times 10^{-6}$ per °C. The correction in the measured length (in mm) due to change in temperature is ______ (*in integer*).

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 22

Explanation

The temperature correction is $\alpha(T - T_0)L = 11 \times 10^{-6} \times (35 - 25) \times 200\ \text{m} = 0.022$ m, which is 22 mm. The tape is longer at the higher temperature, so the true length is greater than the measured one by this amount.
