The GATE Grind

GATE 2025 CE (CE1) – Question 15

Concrete Structures · Design and detailing of beams and slabs · 1 mark · Multiple choice

As per IS 456:2000 provisions for two-way slabs with continuous edges, the longitudinal steel reinforcement to be provided in the edge strip is based on

  1. the calculated minimum bending moment
  2. the area of longitudinal steel provided in the middle strip in the shorter span
  3. the area of longitudinal steel provided in the middle strip in the longer span
  4. the prescribed minimum cross-sectional area of longitudinal steel for slabs

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) the prescribed minimum cross-sectional area of longitudinal steel for slabs

Explanation

In a two-way slab designed by the IS 456 coefficient method, the bending moments apply to the middle strips. The edge strips, each one-eighth of the span wide, get reinforcement parallel to the edge equal only to the minimum steel prescribed for slabs (0.12 % or 0.15 % of the cross-section depending on the steel grade).
