GATE 2026 CH – Question 31

Chemical Reaction Engineering · Reaction rates and kinetics of homogeneous reactions · 1 mark · Numerical answer

Consider a homogeneous gas phase reaction, $A + 2B \to 2C + 3D$, occurring at constant temperature and pressure in a varying volume batch reactor. The vessel is initially charged with 50 moles of A and 150 moles of B. The gases behave ideally. For complete conversion of A, the ratio of the final volume to the initial volume is ______ (rounded off to one decimal place).

Correct answer: 1.49 to 1.51

Explanation

The initial total is $50 + 150 = 200$ mol. Complete conversion of A uses 50 mol A and 100 mol B, leaving 50 mol B and producing 100 mol C and 150 mol D, so the final total is $50 + 100 + 150 = 300$ mol. At constant $T$ and $P$ the volume is proportional to the moles, so $V/V_0 = 300/200 = 1.5$.
