Consider two successive screen sizes in the Tyler standard screen scale, viz. 150 meshes per inch and 200 meshes per inch. Their linear sizes of the openings are $L_{150}$ and $L_{200}$, respectively. If the value of $L_{200}$ is $2.9 \times 10^{-3}$ inch, then the value of $L_{150}$ (in inch) is _____ $\times 10^{-3}$ (rounded off to one decimal place).

Correct answer: 4.08 to 4.12

Explanation

In the Tyler standard scale the opening of a screen is larger than the next finer screen by a factor of $\sqrt{2}$. So $L_{150} = \sqrt{2} \times 2.9 \times 10^{-3} = 4.10 \times 10^{-3}$ inch, giving 4.1.
