The figures I, II and III are parts of a sequence. Which one of the following options comes next in the sequence at IV?

three circles with a shaded sector. In I, a quarter (90°) at the upper left is shaded. In II, a sector of about 135° on the right side, from the top clockwise, is shaded. In III, the lower half (180°) is shaded. The fourth is a question mark, with four options A to D that are circles with different shaded sectors.

Correct answer: (B) Option B in the figure

Explanation

Measure the shaded sector going clockwise from its start. The sizes are 90°, 135°, 180°, so the next is 225°. The starting edge of the sector (measured clockwise from the top) is at 270° in I, at 0° in II and at 90° in III, so it moves 90° clockwise each time and the next start is at 180°, which is the bottom. The sector therefore goes clockwise from the bottom, through the left and the top, to 45° past the top, which is the left side plus a bit more, with 225° shaded. Option B shows exactly this.
