GATE 2025 CH – Question 16

Thermodynamics · Laws of thermodynamics, open and closed systems, entropy and chemical potential · 1 mark · Multiple choice

The boundary of a system does not allow exchange of either mass or energy (in the form of heat and/or work) with the surroundings. The system is termed

  1. Isolated
  2. Open
  3. Adiabatic
  4. Closed

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) Isolated

Explanation

An isolated system exchanges neither mass nor energy with its surroundings. A closed system exchanges energy but not mass, an adiabatic boundary only blocks heat, and an open system exchanges both mass and energy.
