Explanation

In an alluvial channel with a mobile bed, the flow, the sediment and the channel shape are linked, and a number of variables adjust together (width, depth, slope, velocity and the sediment transport or bed form). Counting the variables that are free to adjust compared with the equations that connect them, the open channel flow with a mobile bed has 5 degrees of freedom.
