GATE 2024 CE (CE1) – Question 19

Geotechnical Engineering · Three-phase system, phase relationships, index properties and soil classification · 1 mark · Multiple choice

Consider the statements P and Q.
P: Soil particles formed by mechanical weathering, and close to their origin are generally subrounded.
Q: Activity of the clay physically signifies its swell potential.

Which one of the following options is CORRECT?

  1. Both P and Q are TRUE
  2. P is TRUE and Q is FALSE
  3. Both P and Q are FALSE
  4. P is FALSE and Q is TRUE

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) P is FALSE and Q is TRUE

Explanation

Particles formed by mechanical weathering and close to their source have not been transported and worn, so they are angular, not subrounded: P is false. The activity of a clay (plasticity index divided by the percentage of clay-size particles) measures the swelling potential of the clay mineral: Q is true.
