GATE 2022 CE (CE1) – Question 31

Geotechnical Engineering · Three-phase system, phase relationships, index properties and soil classification · 1 mark · Numerical answer

An uncompacted heap of soil has a volume of 10000 m3 and void ratio of 1. If the soil is compacted to a volume of 7500 m3, then the corresponding void ratio of the compacted soil is __________. (round off to one decimal place)

Correct answer: 0.49 to 0.51

Explanation

With initial void ratio e=1, the solids volume is $V_s=10000/(1+1)=5000$ m³. Compaction changes void volume, not solids volume.

The final void volume is $7500-5000=2500$ m³. Thus $e_f=2500/5000=\mathbf{0.5}$.
