The correct sequence of the four steps involved in anaerobic production of biogas from complex organics is:

  1. Hydrolysis $\rightarrow$ Acidogenesis $\rightarrow$ Acetogenesis $\rightarrow$ Methanogenesis
  2. Methanogenesis $\rightarrow$ Acetogenesis $\rightarrow$ Acidogenesis $\rightarrow$ Hydrolysis
  3. Acidogenesis $\rightarrow$ Hydrolysis $\rightarrow$ Methanogenesis $\rightarrow$ Acetogenesis

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) Hydrolysis $\rightarrow$ Acidogenesis $\rightarrow$ Acetogenesis $\rightarrow$ Methanogenesis

Explanation

Polymers are first hydrolysed to monomers, the monomers are fermented to volatile fatty acids (acidogenesis), these are converted to acetate, hydrogen and $CO_2$ (acetogenesis), and methanogens finally make methane.
